How to Make the Greatest Deposit
You know, everyone is so focused on money and building up more wealth, that I think an article like this one is long overdue for investors to absorb. Too many people put their hope and trust in building up a huge nest egg for retirement, but in the process forget to make key deposits that will further make retirement complete. Please allow me to explain with an amazing true story. I’ve heard it 3 times now, but I could hear it another 103 times and it will never be enough.
Last month I listened to one of the most touching stories that I ever encountered in my life. It's about a Jr. High School Teacher in Texas. The context was during the 70s in a rural area around Houston. One day her students were being very “unruly” and causing a “ruckus”. It was late in the day on a Friday, and she could tell they didn’t want to learn. She didn’t really feel like pushing them on the textbook subject, so she told her class to put away the books and get out one clean sheet of paper. Their new assignment was to write down every student’s name in the class and mention at least one good thing they like about that person…and to be authentic and nice about it.
The class started looking around thinking about what they liked about each other, as they wrote their responses. Some were thinking, ‘oh yes this girl is so smart and helps me understand better.’ Others were saying to themselves, ‘this boy is a great baseball player, and polite too.’ They all studied their friends mentally, then handed in their sheets of papers.
Over the weekend the teacher took the time to list the student’s name at the top, then she compiled all the encouraging “written deposits” that were said about each student…listing them on a single page with loving care. She was so surprised with the kindness her kids were displaying toward each other.
On Monday she handed that individual sheet of paper to each of the students. When the students saw the written compliments, the room was just buzzing with Excitement. Many began to read the comments out loud…. you could see their faces brightening up. You would hear things like “Wow,… I didn’t know they liked me that much”… “I didn’t know they thought I was this talented in music” … “I never thought everyone saw me as this attractive.” On and on they…
