Greatest School Story Ever
“How to make a lasting Deposit.”
Last year, I heard one of the most touching stories ever. It was about a Jr. High School teacher in Texas during the 70s. One day her students were being very unruly and causing a ruckus. It was late in the day on a Friday, and she could tell they didn’t want to learn. She didn’t really feel like pushing them on the textbook subject, so she told her class to put away the books and get out one clean sheet of paper.
Their new assignment was to write down every student’s name in the class and mention at least one good thing they liked about that person. Also, to be real and authentic about it. The class started looking around thinking about what they liked about each other…. they wrote their responses and handed in the papers.
Over the weekend, this Texas teacher compiled all the data. She carefully took time to write all the encouraging comments “deposits” that were said about each student…listing them on a single page with the student’s name at the top. On Monday, she handed that single sheet of paper to each of her students.
When the students saw the written compliments…. the room was just buzzing with excitement. Many began to read the comments out loud…. you could see their faces brightening up. You would hear things like; “Wow, I didn’t know they liked the way I played baseball so…
